Beginning from the home video era up to the most cutting-edge standards of today, video file formats have undergone some major changes. Different file formats do different things, and the right video format for a specific file isn’t necessarily the right one for the others. Navigating the world of video file formats can get confusing, even more so when it comes to playing video on different types of devices. Not all videos can play on all types of devices. In fact, there are plenty of smartphones that can’t play FLV videos. Sample files for CSV, PDF, JPG and for all other file formats in multiple sizes can be downloaded for free!
Here's what i've found so far and what i'm missing. I'm sure you guys can help fill the gaps and might appreciate what i've found already:
I've tried to find files around the 100-200mb mark and that aren't movie rips. I'm trying to keep these things legit you know!

Now with that VC-1 file, when i open it in mediainfo it says the video stream is actually V_MS/VFW/FOURCC. Is this how VC-1 files are shown? As i've never seen one before? If its not, then i need a true VC-1 file please.
Now i think i've got all bases covered with the above files. You've got your Blue-Ray and HD-DVD mandatory formats (mpeg2, VC-1 and h264) and your 2 main 'rip' formats of mpeg-4-avc and wmv. Surely thats everything? Please let me know if not.

very strange, maybe you've got some upscaling going on as mediainfo shows the following:

I'm trying to get a collection of sample files for all available HD formats so that i can benchmark my system and see the effects of different codecs.

You need to be careful though, there's more to it than just the codecs, there's also the bitrates, those can make a huge difference in playability. For example, (if overclocked slightly) my HTPC can just play the Universal logo off King Kong, it averages about 9Mbps IIRC. However my HTPC chokes on King Kong itself, which averages about twice that (IIRC).
Oh, an H.264 is MPEG-4 AVC.

Thanks Stanger. Agreed, the higher the bitrate the better, especially for the vc-1 and h264.
What i'm trying to do is simulate real life scenarios. ie h264 and vc-1 as if you were playing direct from hd-dvd or blueray disk.
And the others as you'd get rips from 'where ever' you get them from! :-) So 9mbps rips for wmv and mpeg4-avc would be fine cos thats what you normally get off the net.
I'm getting very confused regarding h264 and mpeg4-avc though. The samples i've listed as h264 show as 'h264' in mediainfo and play near on 100% gpu usage in powerdvd. yet some mpeg4-avc stuff (described as that in mediainfo) play with varying sucess with the powerdvd codec. I was under the impression that the mpeg4-avc stuff is known as h264 because it is encoded with the x264 encoder. And i 'thought' that the h264 is how you would find it on hd-dvd/BR? Is this correct??
If they are the same(h264 and mpeg4-avc), why do they show differently in mediainfo?

I think you guys are having trouble with reading the right subchannel, there's three in that file. According to TSReader programs 1 and 3 are SD 480i, and program 2 is 1080i:

Am i right in thinking that even though media info shows files are encoded mpeg4-avc or h264, they can be files that don't conform to the true h264 standard and will not get decoded by ati2x00 hardware?
If this is the case, how is it possible to tell if a file conforms or not other than play it and see what happens?

But that is dependant on your own circumstance and hardware really and what works best for you.
Another useful feature would be a list of the more common players that should play back those files.

When I try to play some HD .wmv files TT starts,a nd then stops playing the media.
What settings do I need to set up my TT (currently still running 2.4.1) to play back HD media?

A video file format is a type of file format for storing digital video data on a computer system. Video is almost always stored using lossy compression to reduce the file size.
A video file normally consists of a container (e.g. in the Matroska format) containing video data in a video coding format (e.g. VP9) alongside audio data in an audio coding format (e.g. Opus). The container can also contain synchronization information, subtitles, and metadata such as title. A standardized (or in some cases de facto standard) video file type such as .webm is a profile specified by a restriction on which container format and which video and audio compression formats are allowed.
The coded video and audio inside a video file container (i.e. not headers, footers, and metadata) is called the essence. A program (or hardware) which can decode compressed video or audio is called a codec; playing or encoding a video file will sometimes require the user to install a codec library corresponding to the type of video and audio coding used in the file.
Good design normally dictates that a file extension enables the user to derive which program will open the file from the file extension. That is the case with some video file formats, such as WebM (.webm), Windows Media Video (.wmv), Flash Video (.flv), and Ogg Video (.ogv), each of which can only contain a few well-defined subtypes of video and audio coding formats, making it relatively easy to know which codec will play the file. In contrast to that, some very general-purpose container types like AVI (.avi) and QuickTime (.mov) can contain video and audio in almost any format, and have file extensions named after the container type, making it very hard for the end user to use the file extension to derive which codec or program to use to play the files.
The free softwareFFmpeg project's libraries have very wide support for encoding and decoding video file formats. For example, Google uses ffmpeg to support a wide range of upload video formats for YouTube.[1] One widely used media player using the ffmpeg libraries is the free software VLC media player, which can play most video files that end users will encounter.
