  1. This is a little tutorial for how to open a .rar archive in Tails operating system.
  2. First go to torproject.org and download the .iso image for Tails. The link to the Tails section looks like a flashdrive. Follow the download link to torrent/download. Once you have the .iso file in your computer, burn it on a DVD. Restart your computer and boot from the DVD.
  3. When Tails boots up it will ask a couple of questions, just click on the default 'okay.' Then the desktop will appear. There will be a small onion at the top right of the screen. Wait for it to fully load and turn green. At that point Tails has established a connection to the Tor network. Click on the icon that says, 'Iceweasel - Browse the world wide web.'
  4. Note: Tails has amnesia. Every time you boot it up it is brand new and doesn't remember anything from your prior visits. That means no bookmarks to remind you where you were last time. Since you have no computer memory, you need to use your brain memory. NEVER FORGET TO TURN OFF JAVASCRIPT!!!!!
  5. Turn off Javascript: go to the address bar and type 'about:config' (without the quotes). A search bar will come up under the address bar. Type 'javascript' into the search bar. Find 'javascript.enabled' on the list and right click to toggle to 'FALSE.'
  6. Extracting archives. Archives are just another named for zipped files (or zipped collections of files). In Tails an archive looks like a cardboard box. To open the box you just have to right click on it and select, 'extract here.' This works for .zip files or .7z files or just about every type of archives except .rar files. For some reason most of the world likes to use .rar. For some reason Tails doesn't come ready to extract .rar files, so you have to install peazip.
  7. Go to peazip.org and click on 'linux/BSD' up at the top. Under the 'GTK2' heading, click on 'DEB.' Save it to your desktop. Right click and 'extract here.' The resulting folder will have three sub-folders, but just ignore them and click on 'search' above the folders. Search for peazip. Double click on the purple diamond to open peazip.
  8. How to use peazip:
  9. 1) Tell peazip the password for the .rar archive you want to open. Click on 'Tools' -> 'Enter password.'
  10. 2) Click on 'File' -> 'Open Archive' and double click on the file you want to extract.
  11. 3) Select 'Extract All To...' and tell peazip where to put the file (probably in 'amnesia').
  12. By the way, the most common mistake with peazip is getting the password wrong. Be careful that you didn't accidentally copy a space before or after the password.
